Benefits of Stainless Steel Material
Stainless steel is a versatile material that can be used for a wide variety of applications. When it comes to machining, stainless steel has a number of advantages over other materials.
01.
Strong and Durable
Stainless steel machining ensures precise shaping while retaining exceptional strength and durability, making it ideal for parts that will be subject to high stress or wear.
02.
Corrosion Resistance
Stainless steel’s inherent corrosion resistance remains intact during the machining process, ensuring that machined components can withstand harsh environments and corrosive substances without compromising their structural integrity.
03.
Versatility and Adaptability
Stainless steel machining offers versatility in creating a wide range of products across diverse industries. It enables the production of complex shapes, intricate patterns, and custom designs.
04.
Precision and Customization
Stainless steel machining allows for precise shaping and customization of components, ensuring accurate dimensions, tight tolerances, and intricate designs tailored to specific requirements.
Stainless Steel Grades
There are many different types of stainless steel alloys, each with its own unique set of benefits. When selecting the right type of stainless steel for your project, it is important to consider the environment in which it will be used and the desired properties you need.
The most common types of stainless steels used in precision machining are austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and duplex.
- Austenitic Stainless Steel: This type of stainless steel is the most widely used, accounting for more than 70% of production. Austenitic steel is non-magnetic, have excellent weldability and formability and good corrosion resistance. Common austenitic grades include 304 and 316 stainless steel, and they are the most popular types used in CNC machining projects.
- Ferritic Stainless Steel: This type of stainless steel is less widely used than austenitic, but still has many important applications. Ferritic steels are magnetic and have good weldability, but are not as easy to form or machine as austenitic steel. Common ferritic grades include 409 and 430 stainless steel.
- Martensitic Stainless Steel: This type of stainless steel is known for its high strength and hardness. Martensitic steel is magnetic and can be heat treated to increase strength and hardness. Common martensitic grades include 410 and 420 stainless steel.
- Duplex Stainless Steel: This type of stainless steel is a combination of austenitic and ferritic steel, giving it both ferritic and austenitic properties.
The Most Commonly Used Stainless Steel Types
Stainless Steel 303
Stainless Steel 303 is valued for its excellent machinability and easy formability, and less corrosion resistant than SS304. It is commonly used for manufacturing bolts, nuts, shafts, and precision components.
Stainless Steel 304
Stainless Steel 304 is a versatile stainless steel grade known for its excellent corrosion resistance and weldability. It finds wide application in industries such as food processing, chemical, medical equipment, and construction.
Stainless Steel 316
Stainless Steel 316 offers higher corrosion resistance, making it suitable for marine environments and chemical processing. It also exhibits good heat resistance and resistance to chloride corrosion, making it widely used in the manufacturing of marine equipment, chemical containers, and medical devices.
Stainless Steel 430
Stainless Steel 430 has relatively lower corrosion resistance but exhibits good mechanical strength and wear resistance. It is often used in the production of household appliances, kitchen utensils, and automotive components.
